Its Building Materials Systems segment sells insulating systems, including thermal and acoustical insulation, air ducts formed from glass wool fibers, and foam insulation; exterior systems for the home, including roofing shingles, vinyl siding and accessories, windows and doors, cast stone building products, and housewrap; and asphalt products. These products are used primarily in the home improvement, new residential construction, manufactured housing, and commercial construction markets. The Composite Solutions segment produces glass fiber materials used in composites. This segment sells composite materials to original equipment manufacturers and boat builders, both directly and through distributors, primarily in North America, Europe, Latin America, and Asia Pacific. It has joint ventures with Violet Reinforcement, S. de R.L and and Vitro-Fibras, S.A. The company was founded in 1938 and is headquartered in Toledo, Ohio. Owens Corning and its 17 U.S. subsidiaries filed voluntary petitions for relief under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code in October 2000, and operate business as debtors-in-possession.
